BE AWARE: One of the Most Fatal Diseases Attacking Babies

A+ A-

It is in everyone's culture to visit a friend or relative after giving birth to see the new member of the family. Everyone is so excited to see the baby. They carry it, hug it and kiss the baby.

But infants are very exposed to illness because of their weak immune system against harmful bacteria. Without knowing, the bacteria come from visitors who came to see your baby.

One of the dangerous diseases that can harm your baby is a Herpes Simplex Virus (HS-1). The same virus that is responsible for cold sores.

This disease was what Sara Pugh's daughter had. After 4 days at home, Baby Eloise sent back to the hospital. The baby got ill and the doctor diagnosed that she is having a cold sore. The baby got it from one of the visitors who came to see her. It was caused by a well-intentioned kiss.

"I don't suffer from cold sores and was never really aware of them, but doctors told me that they think my daughter caught the virus one or two days after birth," Sarah said.

Unfortunately, Eloise died while on the life support machines. Although it is very hard for her parents, Sarah is brave and strong enough to spread out the information about this cold sores. Babies under six months are prone to these diseases because they are very young to be vaccinated.

Claire Henderson gave birth and everyone is excited to visit her and her baby Brooke. One night, Claire noticed Brook's mouth was swollen and has cold sores.

Good thing that Claire was already aware of this disease because her friend shared an article regarding this. Although there is no suspicious visitor that is carrying cold sores, Claire noticed that the symptoms of her baby are similar to what she read.

They rushed baby Brooke to the hospital and put on a viral drip for 5 days and is now all better.

"If she (Brooke) had been left it  could have easily spread and- worst case- been fatal. I know this sounds like I am scaremongering, but if my friend had not told me about this, my baby girl could have been very seriously ill," Claire said.

"The moral of the story is DO NOT let anyone kiss your newborn's mouth, even if they don't look like they have a cold sore- 85% of the population carry the virus. Everyone who I have spoken to had not heard of this before and so I felt it was important to share a Brooke's story and raise awareness to stop anyone else going through what we have this week," she added.
