READ: Anti-Duterte Voter Got Bullied After a Controversial Statement?

A+ A-

Social media has played a vital role in the elections, particularly in the campaign of the candidates. Many internet addicts have gone crazy in showing support to their bets. This is also the reason why Renee Juliene Karunungan, a Facebook user, has received defamatory messages.

Karunungan posted a photo with a very controversial statement last March 22. It has a caption that says: "I don't know who to vote for but I know who I'm NOT voting for. I am actively campaigning AGAINST Duterte now because I can't even. Please, let's make this democracy, fought for by so many Filipinos who died for the freedoms we have now, work. We want a great nation? Let's build that together. We have to make it work."

This post immediately earned negative comments from a lot of netizens. Thousands of disparaging messages and statements flooded her inbox. One even said: "Sana ma-rape ka." (I hope you get raped.) Some called her stupid and wished her to be dead.

The girl posted an album of photos last April 7, containing screen shots of derogatory messages she received from allegedly Duterte supporters.

Here are some of the images:

One of the most vicious messages she received says:  "Ul*l. T*ngina mo. UP ka man din galing, pero utak dilis ka. Bobo ka ang pangit mo. Sana ma-rape ka, manakawan ka. 'Yan gusto mo, 'di ba? Ayaw mo ng pagbabago dahil ayaw mo kay Duterte. Sana lang one of these days ma-rape ka para matauhan ka."
(Stupid. S*n of a b*tch. You are from UP but you have the brain of an anchovy. You're stupid and ugly. I hope you get raped, or get mugged. That's what you want, right? You don't want change because you are against Duterte. I hope one of these days you get raped so you'll become enlightened.)

Karunungan said she was unhappy about the criticisms, but she is more concerned with the "values we have come to uphold as a society."
